PMI introduces the Talent Triangle

PMI has announced an overhaul to their Continuous Certification Requirement (CCR) program for PMI credential holders like PMP on 1st of December, 2015 with the introduction of the Talent Triangle. All PMI credential holders expected to complete 60PDUs in 3year cycle will have to compulsorily obtain a minimum of 35 Professional Development Unit (PDUs) in Education with a compulsory 24PDUs shared equally in what is called the Talent Triangle – Technical Project Management (8), Leadership (8) and Strategic and Business Management (8). The remaining 11 can be obtained from any of the three aforementioned areas above.

For CCR Program, you can obtain PDUs in both Education and Giving Back. For the current program, you can obtain PDUs in Education (without restriction to PDUs obtained) from Category A (from a PMI Registered Education Provider), Category B (from any Training firm) and Category C (Self Study). Giving Back (restricted to maximum of 45 PDUs) can be obtained from Category D (Creating Project Management Knowledge), Category E (Volunteer Service) and Category F (Work as PM Professional).

 

 

Why the Change?

PMI stated the following reasons for the change:

  1. Evolution of Professional
  2. Organizations challenged by finding talent with the right skill
  3. It will become a better professional development tool
  4. Solely self-determined curriculum – no guidance provided
  5. Increase the value, relevance and credibility of practitioners

 

 

What’s changing?

  1. Incorporation of the Talent Triangle
  2. Alignment of Education PDU to the Talent Triangle
  3. PDU requirements and limits in certain category
  • Minimum number of Education PDU
  • Minimum number in each aspect of the talent triangle (8 in each of the three aspect)
  • Maximum number of Giving Back to the Professional PDUs (8Max)

 

 

  • All PDUs gained earlier will still be active after the December 1st 2015 change but will expire 1st December, 2017.

 

 

The Three Talent Triangle and their meaning:

 

  1. Technical Project Management

 

  • Knowledge, Skills and Behavior related to specific domain of Project Management

 

  1. Leadership

 

  • Knowledge, Skills and Behavior specific to leadership-oriented skills that help an organization achieve its business goals.

 

  1. Business and Strategic Management

 

  • Knowledge of and Expertise in the industry or organization that enhance performance and better delivers business outcomes.
