You call your friends and you listen to a sweet melody soothing through your ears instead of the usual blare of telephone tunes. This sounds like a fascinating idea except it actually deviates from the issues surrounding the GSM world; the high cost of making a single call, but hopefully with the proposed interconnect tariff by Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) which begins in September, there will be a sigh of relief for different GSM subscribers but a sigh of pain for the Fixed Wireless Subscribers.

Â

Whenever there is a Value Added Service (VAS) introduced by telephone operators in Nigeria, there are always strong agitations by subscribers to obtain these products despite the price implications. It seems or let me rephrase it very very well; an average Nigerian prefers the show-off to the economical implications of obtaining things. We know how to manage ourselves and subsequently know how to throw “Owambe” Parties; no wonder a telecom operator can declare profit in their first year of operation. Nigeria is truly a ground that defies logic.

Â

But all said, what is the benefit of the Callertunez? I remember my first encounter with this VAS; I called a colleague using GLO and a Sunny Ade tune filled my ears early in the morning when I was prepared for work. I really did not know what to make of it but as the music continued singing, I started enjoying the tune before my colleague’s voice cut in. Oh was I mad, the stuff was cool but the interruption was not. This product I can bet you will generate millions of dollars for the telecoms operators because Nigerians love the oppression syndrome; I remember the entrant of WAP and MMS, the argument I witnessed amongst Idumota Spare Part Dealers arguing heatedly about how Glo is better than MTN in being the first to launch this product. Oh my people, when will you change? When will you know what is more important?

Na wao, do they even know what it is used for? This simply shows the psyche of my dear brothers. To set the records straight without any technicality, the primary aim of blackberry is for outdoor staffs of a company trying to access their company’s e-mail like outlook instantly not web e-mails like Yahoo. If you need to access the internet get a cheaper PDA phone. Please, lets stop throwing away those monies to foreign companies; it remind me of the days of our fore fore fathers, where mirrors were used to dazzle us.

WAFITEL EXHIBITION IN LAGOS

As the world of telecoms continues to evolve, it seems the human mind would not rest until convenience becomes the main stream. Another 3-day exhibition titled WAFITEL ended last week with more creative solutions by the participants of the events for the Nigerian Individuals and Businesses alike. Â

Each stands exhibited value solutions as the event climaxed on the 22nd of June but my interest was in sync with any solution that can better the lot of the ordinary Nigerian. So I was not surprised when Redford Technologies had my full attention 5 days in a meeting designed to acquaint my company with solutions that can improve customer’s experience. Of all the axioms and technobable presented by these 2 young gentle men, the sentence that made real sense to me was VOIP-the way go.

MOI WITH THE TWO GUYZ FROM REDFORD TECHNOLOGIES

Â

What is VOIP? The internet has revolved the social-economic fabric of the world bringing with it various possibilities and included, is the convergence of voice in a data network; VOIP is an acronym for Voice over Internet Protocol. As the simple telephony system goes; voice is modulated at callers end and demodulated at the receivers end but passing it over the internet protocol, the modulated digits are “packetized” and based on preferred protocol (H323, SIP or MGCP), it is routed to the receiver and vice versa.

Then the question lingers; why is it the way to go? Well, the cost benefit is huge and the perceived quality is pin-dropped; this generally means that the cost burdened on the subscriber will the lessened and more talk is accomplished which invariable leads to a chain reaction of economic boom and social development. This is the utopia of a forward-thinking Nigerian and we have seen this happen with the introduction of GSM in Nigeria. Â

The side-picture depicts a smiling Dipo Tepede, in the middle, with my company’s business partner after a business dinner. The two guys in the picture represent VSNL international (formally known as Teleglobe before the merger} and it was in this meeting that I came across the word BlackBerry

I wonder what the world will be like without telecommunication; the whole talk of globalization, cultural integration, cultural awareness, international business, etc will not be in focus. I wonder if a writer like me, that reaches about 50 countries daily including Israel, UAE, Uzbekistan, Tanzania, South Africa, etc could accomplish. Without telecoms, development in all strata, sector, government, business, country will be at a standstill. Telecom is a major player in world’s development; this is why I have created a segment in Dipo Tepede.POeT called the Telecoms Story to inform my readers on the latest development in field of telecommunication as it pertains to Nigeria.

Nigeria is a developing country and it is visible to an average Nigerian the effect of the entrance of wireless service providers to the country. A cursory look at a cross-section of the Nigerian socio-economy reveals telecommunication as the industry with maximum impact on peoples’ lives – a typical example is the lunch of GSM (an open standard telephony platform) in 2001 which revolutionized the socio-economic status of Nigeria by reducing unemployment, creating entrepreneurs, improving business processes, encouraging globalization, etc.

What is BlackBerry? What is the impact of BlackBerry to an average Nigerian?

BlackBerry is a wireless handheld mobile device that supports push e-mail, wap services, internet services, telephony, instant messaging and short message services. The difference between blackberry and PDA phone format is real time e-mail service delivery. It is basically for roaming employees to connect to their company’s e-mail where ever they are. For personal services, the subscriber hooks up with the e-mail service of the wireless provider instead of the companies. Whenever a mail hits your inbox, it is monitored by a BlackBerry Exchange Server, which transfers the e-mail to your wireless provider’s data network, which in turn delivers the message to your handheld device instantly. This is the theory behind the push e-mail. The use of the BlackBerry Exchange Server is to give companies the flexibility of using different wireless provider therefore employing the “Least Cost Route” strategy.

The concept was created by a Canadian company called Research In Motion (RIM) and the name “BlackBerry”, which could be passed for the name of a genus of rose, was derived from the button of the handheld device that looks like strawberry. The keyboard of the device has the QWERTY look and a track wheel to navigate. The device could be connected to TCP/IP through a component called Data Network Service (DNS). This allows for custom application development using data streams on BlackBerry devices based on the Sun Java platform. I hope the network provider in Nigeria will offer a flat billing system which aid companies to provide intranet services, chat services, etc to their employees on this handheld device as the traffic will bypass tolls.

The advantage to Nigeria includes better productivity derived from effective business processes, social communication like Yahoo Messenger client and Google Talk client and a powerful medium for the deaf community in Nigeria…………….
Which company is likely to bring BlackBerry to Nigeria?

Answers should be trapped in the comment box. The winner will get a free copy of POeT’s Manual for Aptitude Test Solutions.
