Who is a Black Belt?

The concept of Black Belt as a ranking was first used in the martial arts called Judo in the 19th century and has since spread to fields of martial arts to denote an “expert” in the field in question. Although Lean Six Sigma (LSS) has nothing to do with martial arts, there is a parallel in the arts of interpreting and implementing requisite tools to solve the issue at hand. The LSS Black Belt is a professional who is well versed in the D-M-A-I-C phase of all improvement projects.  They understand how to interpret Six Sigma tools and how to use principles of Lean. Gaining the international certification guarantees ROI and denotes expertise in Management Strategy, Leadership, Process-Orientation and Quality-Focus.
